Surgery: Oncology


Mr Tighe is a Consultant at the internationally renowned Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead with a specialist interest in patients undergoing the surgical management of head and neck malignancy. He is a core member of the Sussex Head and Neck Oncology Multidisciplinary Clinic at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton and an extended core member at the Guildford Head and Neck Oncology Clinic. At these clinic treatment is planned for newly presenting oncology patients with input from the team which includes surgeons, oncologists, specialist nurses, speech and language therapists, dieticians and restorative dental surgeons.

Mr Tighe undertakes his oncology surgery at the Queen Victoria Hospital which is a recognised regional cancer surgical centre. In conjunction with his team Mr Tighe untakes a wide variety of head and neck surgery and special emphasis is placed on functional reconstruction of the surgical defect to optimise post-operative quality of life. This often involves free flap tissue transfer and microvascular anastomosis techniques.

In his private practice, Mr Tighe carries out the more straightforward oncology surgery at the McIndoe Surgical Centre. Patients requiring major surgery are operated on at the Queen Victorial Hospital with its ITU and high dependency facilities and transferred to the McIndoe after an initial recovery period.
